As a first-time attendee at SXSW EDU in March and a second-time attendee at the ASU+GSV Summit earlier this month, my goal as SC’s representative was to build and cultivate relationships with new and old contacts in the K-12 education sector. At Stronger Consulting, we understand that trusting relationships are key to landing search and consulting clients. Getting to know leaders’ stories, values, and beliefs, as well as their organization’s priorities, are key reasons that we spend time at these conferences. Additionally, the depth and breadth of innovation and equity that leaders are bringing to their organizations to impact our kids and communities is inspiring! Below are a few of the takeaways & lessons I learned:
• The Impact of AI — for both conferences, the impact of AI and how organizations are balancing technology with a humanity-first lens is important. The AI tools are only as good as the integrity and privacy of the data, and the lens from which the founders are building those tools.
• The Importance of Having One Conversation At a Time –These events have attendees in the thousands, and it’s easy to get swept up in the energy and the cacophony of the events (FOMO is REAL!). Focusing on the quality of conversation allows for better learning to happen AND stronger, sustainable relationships to be built.
• Big Picture Learning Leadership Journeys –This was a standout event for both conferences. To hear the stories, lessons, and vulnerability of leaders of color in our space is inspiring. The Leadership Journeys are done to music (particularly hip-hop), so it’s the one event I felt most seen. It felt like I was at a party in Brooklyn, NY.
• Other Parting Thoughts — As I reflect on my time spent at these events, I would remind everyone that ensuring the people not in the room (particularly our kids & families) are centered is important to how we shape the work we do. Lastly, understanding who holds power is important to ascertain how tools, systems, and policies are made.
