When TFA Indianapolis transitioned to new executive leadership in 2023, the stakes were high. The Executive Director leads regional strategy, fundraising, team, and community partnerships, and serves as TFA's primary ambassador to Indianapolis schools, funders, and families.
In a city where education credibility is earned slowly and lost quickly, an outsider without authentic roots in Indianapolis' schools and communities would face a steep climb to earn the trust the role demands. The search had to find someone who had already done that work.
Actively recruited Dr. Tenika Holden-Flynn through targeted outreach. Her career had taken her through nearly every layer of Indianapolis education: principal at George Buck School 94 (IPS), founding head of school at Herron Preparatory Academy, and Executive Director of Enroll Indy, the city's unified school enrollment platform.
Treated community credibility as a non-negotiable qualification. Dr. Holden-Flynn's relationships across Indianapolis' public, charter, and enrollment sectors gave her a level of trust no external candidate could replicate, and that TFA Indianapolis needed from day one.
Assessed organizational leadership through a rigorous process: performance task, structured interviews, and scenario-based roleplays that confirmed how she leads strategy, builds partnerships, and navigates complexity at the executive level. She also holds an Ed.D. from Howard University and a master's from Johns Hopkins.
